United Spinal Association
Synopsis by MobiLife, Power Wheel Chairs
In 1946, the United Spinal Association was created by paralyzed veterans. For over 60 years, they have been dedicated to improving the lives of people with spinal cord injury and disorders, as well as, providing them opportunities and services. Some ways they are accomplishing this is by making sure quality health care is provided, enhancing mobility, promoting research and education, increasing opportunities, and by advocating civil rights and independence. There are also three main programs they work with that are also helping them accomplish their mission. One program is the VetsFirst Program which caters to veteran members by offering special services for them: counseling, representation for individuals and appeals, veteran's advocacy, and providing wheelchairs and equipment. The KidsFirst Program was developed for the children and teenagers. This program provides events for kids to participate in that live in wheel chairs. The final program that is provided is the Peer Mentoring Program which offers counseling, guidance, and motivation. For mobility, the Association works with three organizations or programs, the Wheelchair TechGuide, Able to Travel, and Wheelchair Medic, which provide discounts on parts, scooters, or wheelchairs, as well as, help or offer advice related to mobility. They also give information on what's available for travel.
Supporting education and research is a vital way the Association is able to help spinal cord injuries and disorders. USA has given more than $52 million for spinal cord research, as well as, providing seminars, lectures, and training programs. They support two of the nation's most prominent research facilities, SCI's three national organizations for healthcare professionals, and sponsor the nation's premiere conference for Spinal Cord Medicine and Health. They also have journals and publications that provide a high impact of information.
The United Spinal Association is a non-profit membership organization. There are many ways you are able to donate: online, regular recurring, memorial gift, tribute gift, mail or phone, and many more. By donating, you will be contributing to helping and creating opportunities that will enhance the lives of paralyzed Americans.
