Little People of America
Synopsis by MobiLife, Power Wheel Chairs
Little People of America is an organization that is committed to helping people with dwarfism live a more prosperous life by bring attention to this subject globally and finding solutions for these people and their families. This organization began in 1957 when a well known actor, Billy Barty, and twenty other little people joined together in Reno, Nevada to share and learn about different challenges they were having, as well as, gain support from one another. With more than five thousand members, LPA is the biggest organization catered to people with dwarfism.
Many people who are born with dwarfism were born in a family with no history of it every in the family. Little people come from all ethnic groups and have the same life span and intelligence as people without dwarfism. LPA offers two different groups, the Online and National Parents Group that allow families to gain information and know about different opportunities available for them. Through these Groups, children can meet other kids with dwarfism and have a chance to meet adult role models who also live with dwarfism. Adults are able to learn from and trade ideas with one another in regards to health, home and school care, and everyday community experiences. Whether a person has a young adult or teenager, LPA provides programs that offer guidance and support on a lot of different topics that they may face such as dating or choosing a college.
Little People of America is a non-profit organization. They are funded by the hearts of others. They accept donations from individuals or other companies or organizations. They promise that every penny donated will go straightly to helping short-statured individuals live a quality life.
